William Parker, the well-known NY bassist, was the partner who pushed me harder than any other in this period. He was a mentor who never gave any verbal instructions or criticism. It didn't matter that he had been Cecil Taylor's bass player, I don't think I even known that. I would go to his apartment above the fish store and we'd play free, without stoppig for an hour and a half. His commitment matched mine, and his energy forced me to come to his level. For me it meant finding the musical ideas that appear past exhaustion. This recording was in a studio William arranged, one of the better quality situations for me at the time, though I only have a cassette tape. I included this on the sample tape I gave out, though here digitally improved. I did it strictly for the music; few who received it had heard of William at that time.
