about

I present this last of all, almost with apology, or to say, "this is of only antiquarian interest." It is of sentimental value to me, since it is the first recording I made of any playing, on a sixties-style Sony cassette recorder. Through the 70s I'd been picking up the sax, which I'd pretty much abandoned after my teenage years, and in Jan. 1979 I finally committed myself to the instrument in the spirit of "do or die." I had been playing with a local jazz group, which dissed me for "trying to play like Eric Dolphy" when I felt I'd finally achieved something. I woke up the next morning, turned on the tape recorder and played this, which begins at the beginning. It amazes me how much it is still "me."
